| Urbans maternal grandparents were Joseph and Lucy Grussell.
They immigrated from Germany in the 1860's. They settled in Covington, Kentucy
where their daughter Clara was born July 21,1870. Parents of John J. Jewell immigrated form England. The parents came to Philadelphia. Son John went to Kentucy where he met and married Clara Grussell. Their marriage was a happy one, but not of long duration. John died, to the great sadness of the family, before the birth of his third son Urban Henry. Clara's parents lived close by at 609 Bakewell St. They were very helpful to her. I'm sure she had her hands full raising three lively boys. They were not above getting into mischief. I recall Uncle Urban telling how they would steal watermelons out of the garden. He would send his little black friend in to do the dirty work. Then they would crack it open, and on a hot afternoon, that would be a feast indeed, He meant no harm, but on a lovely summers day, how could he resist? When Urban was sixteen years old, his mother Clara married Joseph Campbell. He was a painter and decorator. They lived at 607 Main Street. Grandma Grusell bought him a Sports car for his sixteenth birthday. He was the talk of Main Street. This is a later
car. He was twenty-two years old-1915. |
Young Urban served Mass as an alter boy until he was seventeen
years old. Clara was a deeply religious woman, infact she named her son
after Pope Urban the Fifth, 1362-1370 Rome. Clara could name all the Popes
and their reign and all the Kings and Queens and their reigns. Urban was trained as a printer, but did not care much for that job, it was too dirty. When World War I broke out he joined the American Air Force. He requested over-seas duty. He became an abserver. Sgt. 306 Aerial Squadron A.A.8- A.E.F. West Minister England. He served from April 13,1918 for the period of the emergency. Discharged Nov.15,1918. I'm sure his mothers prayers brought him home safe and sound. Sgt.Urban

Soon
after service he met and married Marie Krawczewski. About a year after they
married, Clara developed arthritis. Joseph Campbell (Born October 12, 1868-
Died March 8, 1926) Passed away four years later. She spent her latter years
in a wheel chair. She died in October 10, 1948. She was a very pleasant
person and a joy to be around.Note; Clara was given a lovely China Shell Plate as a wedding gift. She gave it to Marie Jewell, as her heir in 1925. It was then given to' Dolores Waurzyniak, as Marie Jewells heir January 1990. It was then 102 years old. I will give it to my daughter Susan Brigham, because she and I are both Uncle Urban's Godchildren. |
